How to use Oxygen Concentrator at Home?

It is important to take proper care while using medical devices at home. Otherwise, medical devices cannot provide effective support. Many rental service providers themselves are not aware of this, so proper information about this is not available to the family members of the patients.

An oxygen concentrator is one such device, which is used to provide oxygen support to the patient at home. It is useful for those if the patients saturation fall in between90 - 94 %. Even if up to 85% saturation had dropped then also medical expert suggest to use oxygen concentrator. First of all, it is necessary to know how the oxygen concentrator works.

How It Woks?

Before guideline and protocol we need to understand how it works. As shown in animation beside , it works as follows. Air enter through the filter which eliminate air bones, dust and bacteria up to 10 microns and further air is diverted to compressor. compressor maintain air pressure for Seve beds , this beds is filled with zeolite granolas. Due to it Nitrogen get separate from air . As we know air is a mixture of different gases. Nitrogen is a major part of it. ( Around 80% Approx..) so after removing Nitrogen major part remaining is oxygen. So it is delivered to regulator through which patient get via flow meter. As this machine is not making oxygen, but just extract it from air.

Place Concentrator 2 feet away

Step1- Place it 2 Feet Away

First guideline is for its air inlet. The inlet and outlet of the oxygen concentrator are areas of concern. Because if the machine does not get enough air then the next mechanism does not work properly. For this, the oxygen concentrator should be kept at least 2 feet away from the wall while using it. Even if it is placed close to the wall, the compressor will struggle to draw air. Due to this, the air does not go into the machine in the right amount. As the total air flow decreases, the forward system does not get pressure to work, and this affects the output of the concentrator.

Use Ground Earthing socket to give supply for Concentrator

Step2- Plug In Isolated Board

For heavy current drawing equipment it has common protocol that it should be use isolated and earthing socket. Concentrator is recommended to use isolated and earthing socket. Concentrator has in bult compressor which draw lot of current to run. So its recommended to use isolated socket board with grounded earthing. And if possible use it with voltage stabilizer.

Turn concentrator on 20 min earlier use.

Step 3 - Keep it on before use

For better performance it has a guideline to keep it on before using it. Before using oxygen concentrator, it must be on for at least 15-20 min. This much period required to set up and function all the system properly. Atmospheric gas accumulated in the system need to washout and filtration , concentration process need to streaming. After ward of given period system start to deliver proper concentration which is needed.

Fill Humidifier Bottle .

Step 4 :- Water level and Canula Setup

A humidifier bottle is necessary use to be filled with water. Because gas flow by concentrator is dry gas. And dry gas cause dry nasal mucus. It is harmful for patient. So its necessary to add humidity by flowing gas through water.

A humidifier bottle is a container, and a tube opens under water level . Gas flow through water and comes out from nozzle which is at the top of it. Where we attach canula. But the level of water should not be more than 70% of its volume. Because when water flow through water it creates bubble. If this bubble get formed near outlet of nozzle, water sprinkles may flow through canula. And it will clog canula and prevent flow of oxygen.

Give rest to concentrator after long term use.

Step 5:- Cycle

Oxygen concentrator is a portable device. 24 hr use could be damage its compressor due to over heating. SO its necessary to give rest to its circuit in between long term use. As per model and company cycle can be vary but after 8 hour use its need to give rest for 30 to 45 min. After it again follow all the steps. Follow these protocol and guideline for better result and patient safety.

It is mentioned in user manual cycle period, but if not specified then user can use it 8 hours continuously , then give it rest for 30 to 45 min and again use it for next 8 hours.

No.

Can I use it with out Humidifier?

No humidifier is must to use it with.

Can Oxygen Concentrator use with CPAP or Bipap?

Yes you can.
